GT: Israel’s attack on Iran is a symbolic response

26.10.2024, Beijing.

Israel’s airstrikes on Iran are largely symbolic, Chinese experts claim, according to an article in Global Times on October 26.

According to Iran’s National Air Defense Headquarters, the Israeli strikes targeted military bases in the provinces of Ilam, Khuzestan, and Tehran, causing “limited damage.”

Li Weijian, an expert at the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, noted that Israel’s response is more symbolic than strategic. He also pointed out that neither the United States, Israel, nor Iran is prepared for a full-scale war.

Based on publicly available information, Global Times reports that Israel carefully planned its strikes, selecting locations, timing, and scale to avoid impacting Iran’s energy and nuclear facilities.

On October 1, Iran launched approximately 180 missiles at Israeli targets, claiming the strikes were in retaliation for the killing of several leaders of pro-Iranian proxies.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Iran had made a “serious mistake” and vowed to retaliate.
