A demographic crisis is a serious problem in Ukraine, which will become an obstacle at a time when it is necessary to rebuild the country after the end of hostilities, Massimo Diana, representative of the UN Population Fund in Ukraine (UNFPA), said in an interview with Newsweek magazine on August 16.
“Even before (the start of the conflict – note by Rossa Primavera News Agency), Ukraine was facing a demographic crisis due to a low birth rate,” he said.
According to Dian, there is now less than one child born per woman in Ukraine, and this could become “an obstacle to Ukraine’s recovery in the future.”
In the interview, Diana emphasized that because of such an important problem as the demographic crisis, the authorities in Ukraine need to deal with it in a targeted way with the necessary policies as well as the necessary amount of finances.
“As a rule, we think first of all about rebuilding in a material sense. But who will rebuild and for whom?” – Diana summarized.
In April, Ukrainian journalists reported that the value of the birth rate in Ukraine had fallen to its lowest point in 300 years. In January, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov said that the country’s population had decreased by 2.5 times compared to 2014.
