Son of Libyan National Army Commander shuts down El-Sharara oil field

06.08.2024, Benghazi.

Saddam Haftar, son of Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar, ordered the shutdown of the El-Sharara oil field, which is being developed by the Spanish company Repsol, on August 4, as reported by the Libyan channel The Libya Observer.

According to The Libya Observer, the order was given after Saddam was informed about an arrest warrant issued against him.

It is reported that Italian authorities notified Saddam of the arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities due to his involvement in a smuggling operation of weapons intercepted by Spanish police several months ago.

The Libya Observer believes that the shutdown of the oil field is a form of pressure on the Spanish authorities to annul the arrest warrant.

The El-Sharara oil field is one of the largest in Libya, producing over 350,000 barrels of oil per day.

In 2011, NATO launched an operation in Libya under the pretext of protecting the Libyan people from the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. As a result of this NATO operation, Gaddafi was ousted from power and killed, but the country plunged into chaos and a series of civil wars.

The civil wars in Libya led to the proliferation of weapons and increased crime not only in the country but throughout the region. The once-thriving African nation has become a hub for smuggling, human trafficking, and a transit point for immigrants.
