Kremlin says it expects nothing from Orban’s visit to Kiev

The Russian leadership has not expectations of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visit to Kiev, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a briefing for journalists on July 2.

“We do not expect anything; it is probably not for us to comment,” Peskov reacted to a question about the Kremlin’s attitude to the Hungarian prime minister’s visit to Kyiv.

The head of the Kremlin press service noted that Hungary currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, and that Orban flew to Kiev not only and not so much as a representative of his country, but as a representative of Brussels. Although, Peskov added, “Orban is well known as a politician who is able to defend the interests of his country in a very tough manner.”

In response to a clarifying question, Peskov added that Orban’s visit to Kiev had not been discussed with Russia in any way in advance.

Orbán systematically advocates a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and opposes further involvement of NATO in this crisis. Hungarian public opinion reacts strongly to the situation with the Magyar ethnic minority in Transcarpathia, which causes tension with Kiev.
