Vučić: Ukrainians in Serbia support Putin more than people from Russia

08.02.2024, Belgrade.

Russian President Vladimir Putin enjoys more support in Serbia from people who came from Ukraine than from people who came from Russia, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told reporters on February 7.

Vucic said that there were not so many Russian citizens who came to Serbia, but they mostly held anti-Putin views.

“It is also interesting that Ukrainians in Serbia are mostly Russian speakers and are much more in favor of President Putin,” the Serbian leader said.

He said that there were 45-50 thousand of these people, but it was unclear whether he meant Russian or Ukrainian citizens in Serbia, or all of them together.

Vučić also expressed his position on the Russian influence on Serbia and on him personally. He said that economically, Germany has an incomparably greater influence on his country.

In terms of political influence, the president said that he, as well as the heads of the Serbian government and parliament, are not influenced by any other country, only by the Serbian people. According to him, the Serbian president “cannot be ordered by anyone from Washington, Moscow or Berlin”.

At the same time, Vučić admitted that some of the political players in Serbia may be influenced by Russia, but some are not.
