Ukraine will not cope without mobilization, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry (GUR), Kirill Budanov, told the Financial Times on January 21.
Budanov expressed hope that 2024 would be more successful for Kiev than for Moscow, but said that “it is impossible to even imagine that Ukraine will succeed without mobilization.” Budanov said there is a noticeable shortage of personnel in the Ukrainian army.
He repeated a call by Ukraine’s top military leadership for more recruits.
During the interview, the head of the GUR did not make predictions for 2024 about the confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, but said that he hoped that Ukraine’s success would be greater than Russia’s.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the Ukrainian military had requested up to 500,000 more Ukrainian citizens to be recruited into the army, which were needed to ensure the rotation of soldiers.
It was also reported that the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers and the Verkhovnaya Rada are currently working on finalizing a new draft law on mobilization, which will sharply strengthen mobilization measures and prescribe tough measures against those who evade military service, including economic ones.
