Lavrov: Kiev feels permissiveness, it can even torture US citizens

18.01.2024, Moscow.

The Kiev regime feels the permissiveness of its actions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on January 18 at a press conference to summarize the results of Russia’s diplomacy in 2023.

The Kiev Nazi regime became so bold that it can torture US-Americans to death in prisons, Lavrov said. We are talking about the death of the American journalist and blogger, Chilean and US citizen Gonzalo Lira.

“It [Kiev regime] is even allowed to persecute and torture US citizens to death in prison. And everyone is silent about that,” Lavrov said at a press conference.

The minister recalled that in other cases, the United States begins to take active measures when its citizens are behind bars. However, in the case of Lira’s arrest, “it didn’t say a word, even didn’t lift a finger,” the minister commented.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on ignoring the situation with the detention of Lira by the authorities of Chile and the United States. As a result, the journalist died in a Ukrainian prison.

Later Lira’s death was confirmed by the US State Department. However, the department refused to comment on the situation, citing respect for the deceased’s family.

American businessman Elon Musk called Lira’s death terrible and demanded that Zelensky to explain his arrest. Musk also said that the arrest of a US citizen in Ukraine was absolutely unacceptable.

Earlier, political commentator and ex-employee of Fox News channel Tucker Carlson also said that the journalist was detained for criticizing the governments of Zelensky and Biden.

Carlson emphasized that the US Embassy did absolutely nothing to help Lira. According to Carlson, the US administration supported the imprisonment and torture of the journalist despite his citizenship.

Earlier, another journalist Alex Rubinstein also reported that Lira developed bilateral pneumonia and other illnesses in prison, which became apparent in mid-October.

However, the authorities in Kiev denied the journalist’s health problems and did not provide him with any assistance. Doctors recognized bilateral pneumonia only on December 22.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained Lira in May 2023 in Kharkov. He was charged with justifying Russia’s actions against Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also noted the work of the journalist in covering the truth about what is happening on the territory of Ukraine and Nazi atrocities. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Lira covered the Ukrainian crisis “honestly and expertly,” while being in the thick of the events.
