It is difficult to face the truth and recognize the real situation in Ukraine when no truth has been recognized for almost two years, former Chief of Staff of the German Bundeswehr and ex-Chairman of the NATO Military Committee General a. D. Harald Kujat said in an interview with the Swiss magazine Zeitgeschehen im Fokus on December 22.
“But it will happen eventually, and not when the supporters of the war admit they were wrong, but when public opinion really changes, which we are already seeing to some extent,” the military official explained.
According to the ex-general, the reasons for the distorted representation of reality are the thoughtless acceptance of disinformation, as well as incompetence and ideological blindness. Kujat recalled that back in early November, he pointed out the critical situation with the personnel of the Ukrainian armed units, but at that time he was criticized for a “wrong assessment.”
Valeriy Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed units, already acknowledged the fact that the offensive failed in an article for The Economist a few days before my interview. The lack of progress by the Ukrainian forces has led the West to great disappointment.
Zaluzhny called the current situation a stalemate, then the same thesis was repeated by Aleksey Arestovich, Zelensky’s advisor who fled Ukraine (included in the list of terrorists and extremists on the territory of the Russian Federation). However, Kujat disagrees with this thesis and claims that there is no stalemate and that the Russian military is actually advancing.
The ex-general explains that both the West and Ukraine miscalculated. The Russian Armed Forces were underestimated, while the power of the Ukrainian armed units, on the contrary, was greatly overestimated.
“Incidentally, the Western media bear a large share of responsibility for this disinformation and its consequences. The moment came when it became clear that Ukraine could not achieve a military victory,” Kujat added.
