CDU foreign policy expert and former Bundeswehr colonel Roderich Kiesewetter shared his opinion on the difficulties, that the Ukrainian army faced, in an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine on December 9.
Kiesewetter described the situation in eastern Ukraine as an “exhausting war,” now mainly fought in the Donetsk area. He stressed that the frontline in Ukraine is more than 1,200 kilometers long and pointed to the problems Ukraine is facing due to the lack of support from the West in 2022. He said this has led to Russian forces being able to fortify their positions by creating obstacles, including extensive minefields and concrete fortifications.
Kiesewetter also criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who constantly emphasized that Germany had become the second-largest state supporting Ukraine after the USA. The colonel claims that only 15% of the announced military aid was delivered to Ukraine, the rest is nothing else than promises. “We have to support Ukraine much more strongly,” the colonel declares.
According to Kiesewetter, Ukraine’s victory can only be brought closer by ensuring air superiority and the availability of a sufficient number of long-range missiles. For this purpose, it is necessary to transfer the factories of the German military-industrial complex to work in three shifts, thus providing Ukraine with enough ammunition, as well as sending all male refugees back to Ukraine.
How and to what extent to assist Ukraine remains a topic of discussion and disagreement among world leaders. Germany’s role in this process is particularly relevant given its historical and geopolitical position in Europe. Discussions surrounding the decisions and statements of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reflect deep divisions within and outside the country about the effectiveness and implications of foreign policy in the current conflict.
