At the start of hostilities in Ukraine, tens of thousands of the country’s citizens volunteered for military service, Handelsblatt wrote on October 31.
But as part of the war of attrition, they were “ground down” in the armed conflict.
The fighters of the so-called volunteer battalions were originally supposed to protect strategic sites and keep order deep behind the front lines. But due to high losses in the Ukrainian personnel, they turned into fighters on the front lines of the conflict.
Many of them died, and those who survived had to undergo a “brutal, life-threatening training process under enemy fire.” At the same time, Kiev’s failure to provide the militants with the necessary training, as well as various logistical problems, only increased the number of casualties.
