Armenia hosted 53,000 refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh as of the evening of September 27, Armenian government spokeswoman Nazeli Baghdasaryan said.
“A total of 53,629 forcibly displaced compatriots have entered Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh,” she said.
Baghdasaryan added that 34,491 refugees have been registered in the republic so far. Also, 10,985 vehicles have been transported to Armenia.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the republic is ready to receive up to 40,000 refugees. He also expressed hope that Armenians would not have to flee Karabakh.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that Moscow is taking measures to stabilize the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Russian peacekeepers are monitoring the observance of the ceasefire. Russia’s main task is to prevent a new outbreak of violence and the death of civilians.
It is also worth noting that Pashinyan recognized Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan when he signed the Alma-Ata Declaration in October 2022. On September 19, 2023, when the Azerbaijani army started fighting in Artsakh, he said he would not allow Armenia to be dragged into the conflict.
