USA doubles uranium purchases from Russia

The United States purchased the maximum 416 tons of uranium from Russia in the first half of the year since 2005, RIA Novosti reported on August 24.

According to the agency’s calculations, the United States increased its uranium purchases from Russia 2.2 times in the first six months, from 188 tons in the first half of the year to 416 tons.

The last time the USA made the recorded purchase was in 2005. Then, Washington bought 418 tons of uranium from Moscow.

The USA paid $696.5 million for the purchased uranium – a record amount for the entire history of monthly observations, which has been conducted since 2002. Over the year, the supply cost has increased by 2.5 times.

The USA also began to buy more uranium from the UK. Imports increased by 28% to $383.1 million. France provided the largest increase in supplies. Purchases from France increased from $1.9 million to $319 million. Its share in the total volume of uranium imports to the USA amounted to 15%.

Germany occupied the fourth place in uranium supplies – $277 million, up 1.5%, and Canada – 11%, which doubled its supplies.

The Netherlands halved its supplies to $193 million and dropped to the sixth position.
