The propaganda thesis that Ukraine is defending Poland’s freedom in its conflict with Russia drove the Polish authorities into a trap, Myśl Polska editor-in-chief Jan Engelgard said in his editorial published on August 2.
“Promoting the propaganda thesis that Ukraine is fighting for the entire ‘free world,’ for Europe, and thus for the preservation of Poland – is very convenient for the authorities in Kiev, because it gives them support, military, financial and political aid. <…> Thus, Poland has fallen victim to its own propaganda and the dogma that this is ‘our war’,” the article says.
According to Engelgard, the adoption of this thesis is followed by Poland’s irrevocable economic, political and other obligations towards Ukraine, as well as the inappropriateness of any criticism of a state whose citizens die allegedly for your country’s freedom.
The article’s author emphasized this thesis’s absurdity, which has no relation to reality. In his opinion, the real reason for the conflict is the struggle for Moscow to maintain its influence over the territory of the former USSR.
Engelgard drew attention to the example of Hungary, which, unlike Poland, distanced itself from the conflict from the very beginning, and this brought complete clarity to Ukrainian-Hungarian relations.
In February this year, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that Ukrainian soldiers were dying for Poland’s freedom and that “for the first time in 300 years, someone other than Poles is fighting for their freedom”.
