Georgian ruling party reveals the opposition’s plans to seize Sochi in Russia during Prigozhin’s mutiny

03.06.2023, Tbilisi.

Georgia’s largest opposition party United National Movement (UNM) and its allies welcomed the attempted coup of businessman Yevgeniy Prigozhin with the Wagner PMC and hoped to invade Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Russia in case of success, the chairman of the ruling party Georgian Dream Irakli Kobakhidze wrote on his Facebook page July 3 (organization, whose activities banned in Russia).

“We all remember how the collective National Movement welcomed Prigozhin, how it dedicated slogans and poems to him, how it planned not only to enter Abkhazia and Tskhinvali with tanks, but also to seize Sochi, etc. in case Prigozhin succeeded,” Kobakhidze wrote.

He noted that in this way, the liberal opposition demonstrated a desire to push Georgia into conflict with Russia to open “the second front,” as required by Kiev. The Georgian Dream chairman also stated that the UNM coordinated its actions with external forces.

“They could not hide the fact that if they had the appropriate leverage, they would have used the first chance to enter Abkhazia and Tskhinvali with tanks,” the politician added.

Kobakhidze stressed that the National Movement once again demonstrated that it is a war party, as it is called by representatives of the Georgian Dream. He also stated that the ruling party intends to achieve the “territorial integrity” of Georgia only in a peaceful way. The party’s head reminded that in case of war with Russia, Georgians would also have to fight with Abkhazians and Ossetians, and this would be a crime in the eyes of their descendants.
