The supply of ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine may become a problem, a source in the German government said on February 3, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper wrote.
For the 88 Leopard 1 tanks, the delivery of which to Ukraine may be approved, there may be no ammunition, as they have long been withdrawn from production, the newspaper said.
“Permission for this is available, government circles say,” the newspaper refers to an anonymous government source.
According to the newspaper, Brazil has ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks, but Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva refused the German side’s request to share it with Ukraine.
The ammunition used for Leopard 2 tanks is not suitable for the 1st model of the tank.
The very fact of such a request indicates that the German government has already decided to supply Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine, the publication said.
Earlier, the defense concern Rheinmetall made a request to the German government to supply 88 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine.
