US Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman should not teach everyone how to live but should work to improve US-Hungarian relations, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó on February 2, ATV informed.
“Ambassadors are sent to other states to work on improving bilateral relations based on mutual respect, not to teach others how they should live,” Szijjártó said.
The minister noted that Hungary is a sovereign state, and the era of “governors and regents” who were sent to tell other states how to live their lives is over.
“Therefore, it does not matter what a foreign ambassador thinks about internal political processes in Hungary,” Szijjártó stressed.
He added that the people of Hungary will decide for themselves how well their government is working, “and then they will express their will in the next parliamentary elections, as they have done so far.”
Earlier, US Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman accused the Hungarian authorities of “counteracting” European anti-Russian sanctions. In his opinion, Hungary calls for peace in Ukraine, but simultaneously allegedly pursues a policy favorable to Russia, opposing the sanctions.
According to the Hungarian foreign minister, his country’s foreign policy is determined by Hungarian national interests, and the earliest possible achievement of peace in Ukraine is in these interests. According to him, Hungary “will not give up its commitment to peace.”
Moreover, Péter Szijjártó recalled the attempts to interfere in the recent parliamentary elections in Hungary. The case in question was the US foundation Action for Democracy which funded the Hungarian opposition parties. And now, the USA demanded Hungary to be more respectful and to make decisions that are favorable to other countries, the minister noted.
Hungary is one of the few countries in the European Union that does not want to break off relations with Russia. For example, at the end of January Hungary’s President Katalin Novak reminded that Russia plays an important role in many processes in the world. Previously, the Hungarian authorities repeatedly opposed anti-Russian sanctions.
