Leszek Balcerowicz, former minister of finance and author of liberal reforms of the 1980-1990s in Poland, predicted the economic collapse in 2023 in the country in an interview with RMF FM on January 25.
“This year, for various reasons, we should expect an economic collapse,” he said. According to the former minister, because of this, the rating of the ruling Law and Justice party will fall even more than in 2022.
Balcerowicz believes that a profound criticism of the economic policies of the government should become the main strategy of the opposition in the upcoming elections. “The opposition’s emphasis on the fact that the Law and Justice party is hampering the economy is what voters expect,” the economist said.
After Poland refused to import Russian gas in the spring of 2022, the country faced an energy crisis and galloping inflation. Despite the opening of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline from Norway to replace the Russian gas pipeline, the situation of the Polish economy is still quite difficult.
