United States plans to deploy new unit of Marine Corps to Japan’s southern prefecture of Okinawa

Plans to deploy an American Marine Corps unit to the Islands of Okinawa prefecture of Japan was announced on January 10, as reported by the Kyodo news agency.

The report says that representatives of Japan and the United States have agreed to deploy a regiment of American Marines in Okinawa Prefecture to protect the remote islands.

The establishment of a Marine Littoral Regiment, or MLR, will consist of 2,000 Marines. MLRs are capable of quickly deploying small groups of Marines with the task of securing positions to attack enemies and support US Navy or allied warships in the sea near China and Taiwan.
