Russia needs SMERSH counterintelligence agency again — DPR leader’s deputy

10.01.2023, Donetsk

The “Spies Must Die” (Russian: SMERSH) counterintelligence agency should be re-launched in Russia, Yan Gagin, advisor to the leader of the DPR Denis Pushilin, said in an interview to RIA Novosti of January 9.

According to the advisor to the leader of the DPR, it is time to re-issue the order of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Joseph Stalin that established SMERSH, the “Spies Must Die” organization.

Yan Gagin reminded a recent statement by Ukrainian officials who claimed responsibility for terrorist attacks and subversive operations on the Russian territory. “Everything that blew up or was set on fire in Russia last year was done by Ukrainian saboteurs and those who support them,” Yan Gagin cites the statement.

The advisor to the leader of the DPR also pointed out an address of the US Department of State to the Russian citizens published on January 5, which must be interpreted as a call for a coup d’etat in Russia. He also indicated a new wave of addresses and talks “by the so-called creative intelligentsia,” which can amount to betrayal and high treason.

On January 8, member of State Duma’s Defense Committee Lieutenant General Andrey Gurulev said that SMERSH must be re-established.
