Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger called for an earliest possible end to hostilities in Ukraine in an article, but German Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock expressed a different view of the situation. A review of recent publications by journalist Reinhard Lauterbach was published by the newspaper Junge Welt on December 18.
In his article for the conservative British magazine Spectator published at the weekend, Kissinger argues that “Russia should be able to retain the territories it controlled at the beginning” of the SMO, including Crimea and parts of Donbass. At the same time, Kissinger believes, the rest of Russia’s “acquisitions” should be negotiated and re-run referendums to ascertain the will of the local population. The former diplomat claims that it is time for the West to turn Ukraine’s past successes, such as its de facto accession to NATO, into political reality.
According to Kissinger, neutrality is no longer an appropriate course of action for NATO. He called frivolous and dangerous the notion that Russia might win its special operation or otherwise achieve Ukraine’s separation.
In contrast to his colleague, Annalena Berbock told BamS newspaper that “a cease-fire on Russian terms will not end the suffering of the Ukrainian people.”
