The Russian society and political elite have not comprehended the gravity of the situation our country has come to having to face a conventional conflict in Ukraine, said philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan in an interview to Anna Shafran on the Zvezda radio station published on December 9 on YouTube.
“The defense industry in its current condition is inadequate to a major conventional war. This is a new kind of a war, do you understand? Sometimes I feel like crying because this is not understood, by our society as well. The society does not understand what one million shells per month is,” the political scientist explained.
Over the recent months, most of the public criticism targeted the Russian army, but the resources for the army come from the defense industry, he noted. According to Kurginyan, the Russian defense industry was unprepared to this kind of a military conflict, this kind of partial mobilization, and the number of the forces deployed.
“An adequate mobilization system is required to provide clothes, shoes, equipment etc. to all those mobilized. But we have none. No one built it. Not in the wildest dreams could we imagine what is happening now,” Kurginyan explained. He added that an ordinary Russian citizen is worried with the current events, but he is not ready to really look into what is taking place.
“Everyone lacks understanding of what has happened as well as the degree and severity of the disaster, do you understand? How did it all crash?” the political scientist outlined the situation.
He noted that the Ukrainian industry is in an even worse condition; however, the entire West is now working to supply Ukraine, and it has not destroyed its production facilities.
Russia will have to promptly restore, in a complex manner, all the necessary plants, design bureaus at the plants, and many more things, Kurginyan stressed. In his opinion, this hard work seeking to regain the lost potential is what the elite and the public do not want.
The political scientist suggested that those hesitating should count the amount of resources spent monthly to the military conflict and the amount of such resources arriving from the defense industry.
“You will find that you cannot live by the Soviet heritage for too long exhausting the available resource. You have to build it up,” Kurginyan concluded.
