Russian Foreign Ministry comments on the Russian Armed Forces' strike on the military training ground near Lvov

The Russian Armed Forces’ strike on a training ground in the Lvov region is a preventive measure for mercenaries willing to fight against Russian troops in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a regular briefing on March 17.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that high-precision, long-range weapons struck training centers of the Ukrainian army in the village of Starichi and at the Yavorovsky military training ground near the city of Yavorov, Lvov Region. The missile strike killed 180 foreign mercenaries and destroyed a shipment of foreign-made weapons.

“We hope that such a preventive measure will be sobering for legionnaires who have expressed a desire to come to Ukraine. Such ‘reception’ will be provided for them,” Zakharova said.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed that Ukrainian embassies and missions abroad were recruiting foreign nationals for the so-called Zelenskyy Volunteer Foreign Corps and that numerous “soldiers of fortune” were streaming into Ukraine via Poland.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special operation to protect Donbass in response to a request for assistance from the heads of the LPR and DPR. The goal of the operation is the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. At the same time, the Russian leader stressed that there will be no military occupation of Ukraine.
