Has Poland forgotten who liberated it from fascism? Opinion

Polish authorities regularly blame Germany and Russia for the troubles of the modern Polish state and even demand reparations from these countries, despite the fact that Russia as part of the USSR took part in the liberation of Poland from fascism, according to Rossa Primavera News Agency editorial published on March 11.

Earlier, Polish authorities disclosed the priority of their foreign policy: according to the resolution of the Senate and Polish Sejm of March 11, it is membership in NATO. The resolution underlines the “historical significance” of joining the alliance, and also broadcasts the myth of totalitarianism and criminality of the USSR, which allegedly prevented Poland’s democratic development.

“Poland tragically survived the tragic history of the 20th century, fighting against two criminal totalitarianisms – Nazi and Communist, striving with political consensus to firmly establish itself in the structures of the Western world, based on the principles of democracy and self-determination of nations,” the parliament resolution reads.

“The concept of ‘two totalitarianisms’ was developed in Britain in the 1930s, finally popularized by the philosopher Karl Popper in 1945.

Many historians and political scientists note that one of the main goals of this concept is to denigrate the USSR and communist ideology, rather than to scientifically seek to classify state regimes. This theory became popular in NATO countries as a justification for the fight against the USSR.

In Poland, after the collapse of the communist system, it found supporters in all echelons of power, among social democrats, liberals and conservatives alike.
