Turcologist, Senior Research Assistant of the National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Avatkov on January 19 on Telegram critically assessed Turkey’s proposal to invite the presidents of Russia and Ukraine to discuss their disagreements.
He reminded that the president of Turkey invited the presidents of Russia and Ukraine to discuss their disagreements.
“This is so nice of the Turkish side; however, Erdoğan’s spokesman Kalın said himself that it is not about Ukraine, but the conflict is global and it affects global security,” the expert noted.
Also, he reminded that official Ankara puts itself in an unfavorable position by this proposal.
“Ankara is in a difficult situation as it again plays both sides against the middle. Erdoğan is arming Kiev, and he plans to visit Ukraine, he refuses to acknowledge the reunification of Crimea with Russia, but at the same time he has major economic ties with Moscow. Meanwhile, NATO’s confrontation with Russia is not in his favor as it interferes with his promotion of the Turkish-centric world,” the turcologist wrote.
The expert notes that Turkey, which perceives itself as a global power for some reason, has to act provocatively.
“It has to show to the West that it is breaking the post-Soviet territory from Russia while telling Moscow about its independence and readiness to dialogue,” Avatkov wrote.
However, according to the expert, the Russian side sees everything: Turkey’s plans and the way they are well integrated in the Anglo-Saxon game.
Previously, the Turkish president’s spokesman İbrahim Kalın said that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan invited the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky to visit Turkey to resolve the disagreements between their two countries.
