Information about Russia’s alleged provocations in the territory of Donbass tInformation about Russia’s alleged provocations in the territory of Donbass to ensure “the Russian Federation’s so-called invasion of Ukraine” is US disinformation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on January 17.

He reminded that US officials continue to speculate on the so-called Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“In particular, by communicating completely false information that we are preparing a provocation with an attack virtually on the Russian-speaking population of Donbass to get an excuse for this invasion. Besides, Mrs. Psaki said, ‘the way it happened in 2014,’” Lavrov said.

According to Lavrov, the tragedy of contemporary Ukraine “indeed began in 2014,” but it resulted from a coup d’etat organized “to a major extent” from the US but not due to any provocations from Russia. Today, Ukraine remains under external control from the US, and Washington can “simply force” Kiev to fulfill the Minsk agreements, he added.

The Russian foreign minister noted that the number of prepared scenarios for the event of a potential Russian “invasion” of Ukraine suggests that the US authorities announced a contest of scenarios, as previously Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland spoke about 18 scenarios of this kind.

“The US was reported to have 17 security and intelligence services. With the Department of State it makes 18. Perhaps they are announcing a contest there,” Lavrov said.
