Kurginyan: Union republics seceded from the USSR illegally

11.12.2021, Moscow.

The republics violated the law regulating secession from the Soviet Union, said analyst, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on December 8 on the Obyektivno program on the Belarusian ONT channel.

“The Congress of People’s Deputies of the USSR adopted a law regulating the procedure of seceding from the Soviet Union,” the political scientist reminded.

“Exit conditions, adopted in a democratic and legitimate way, were such that even their direct fulfillment would put any anti-Soviet forces in a very difficult situation,” Sergey Kurginyan said.

He indicated several of them: “any territories that want to stay must stay, all heavy industry created by the Soviet Union must stay under Union control, etc.”

The analyst stressed that we should have demanded that the Baltic States, Ukraine, and Moldavia should only leave the Union according to the active law adopted by the Congress of the People’s Deputies of the USSR.

“The Belavezhye Accords were a sudden disorderly illegitimate way of exiting. They could not exit like that. To secede like that, they should have had a referendum against the Soviet Union and said it did not exist any longer, and thus its law was nor longer effective,” Kurginyan stressed.

30 years ago, on December 8, 1991 in Belavezhye, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine signed an agreement establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States, which de facto destroyed the Soviet Union.
