Head of Donetsk People’s Republic describes response to Kiev’s use of Turkish strike drones

05.12.2021, Donetsk.

The DPR’s response to Kiev’s purchase of Turkish Bayraktar drones was described by the republic’s head Denis Pushilin at a meeting with natives of Donbass in Moscow on December 5.

According to Pushilin, the DPR cannot just sit and watch how Kiev buys combat drones. The republic is looking for ways to respond.

Against the background of Ukraine’s purchases of Bayraktar drones, we have no right to stand still and not react. On the one hand, our military-industrial complex does not stand still, on the other hand, we are studying where what can be purchased,” he said.

The DPR head noted that the Donetsk defense industry also has its own potential in terms of developing anti-aircraft defense systems that can respond to the challenge of Turkish drones. The republic’s anti-aircraft defense systems are currently being modernized.

We still have production capacity, we simply do not have the right to stop working and not develop countermeasures systems, including Bayraktars,” Pushilin said.

He noted that the OSCE does not respond to Kiev’s use of Bayraktar drones, although this directly contradicts the Minsk agreements that allow only the OSCE mission itself to use drones in the conflict zone.

Pushilin promised that if Bayraktar drones approach the territory of the republic, they will be destroyed at any opportunity.

Bayraktar strike drones have been purchased by Ukraine from Turkey since 2019. So far they perform reconnaissance functions on a regular basis, but on October 26, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck by means of Bayraktar in the area of the United Forces operation (OOS) in Donbass.

According to Lieutenant General Sergey Naev, commander of the Combined Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, despite the fact that Ukraine has struck only once with a Turkish drone, all such drones, even just conducting reconnaissance, are taken into the air with combat gear.
