Crimean Tatars condemn Erdoğan's statement on Crimea

22.09.2021, Simferopol.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s statement on the annexation of Crimea is a deep geopolitical mistake, the head of the regional national-cultural autonomy of Crimean Tatars Eyvaz Umerov said, RIA Novosti informed on September 22.

“The Turkish authorities continue to insist on the Ukrainian entity of Crimea, continuing to repeat their profound geopolitical mistake. Sweeping aside the issue of recognition of Northern Cyprus, the Turkish leadership falls into the trap concerning the issue of Crimea,” Umerov said.

Umerov noted that if Turkey recognized Crimea as being a part of Russia, it would lead to increased cooperation between Russia and Turkey in the economy.

“Unfortunately, the Turkish authorities do not want to hear the Crimeans, including the Crimean Tatars, whose interests they allegedly try so zealously to protect,” Umerov said.

Umerov advised Turkey to send its delegation to Crimea, after which the Turkish authorities will see the need to recognize Crimea as Russian.

Earlier Erdogan made a statement at the UN General Assembly that it is necessary to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine, including the territory of Crimea. The head of Turkey also spoke about the protection of the rights of Crimean Tatars, saying that more efforts should be made to resolve this issue.
