Opinion: Raisi’s victory will bring a pro-Russian government to power in Iran

18.06.2021, Moscow.

The expected victory of Ebrahim Raisi in the presidential elections in Iran would contribute to the strengthening of relations between Russia and Iran, an interlocutor of Rossa Primavera News Agency familiar with the situation said on June 18.

The expert noted that the current Iranian government is composed of pro-Western ministers. Ebrahim Raisi’s government would consist of technocrats and conservatives.

Taking into account the significant strengthening of relations between Russia and Iran over the past year, “one of the results of the presidential elections in Iran will be that much more pro-Russian ministers will come to power in one or two months, if there are such in Iran at all,” the spokesman noted.

One of the reasons for the existence of anti-Russian sentiments in the Iranian elite is the active actions of Ukraine, the expert noted.

“Until 2014, about one thousand Iranians graduated from Ukrainian universities every year, while only about two hundred graduated from Russian universities,” he added.

“Thank God that the adherent of the “independent” Ukraine drastically damped relations with Iran since 2014. But the period of study in Ukraine has left behind generations of Iranians,” the agency’s interlocutor concluded.

On June 18, presidential elections are being held in Iran. According to opinion polls, the head of the Iranian judiciary, Ebrahim Raisi, will win the elections with about 60% of the votes.
