Kurginyan: The reform of Catholicism destroyed harmonious Man

Russian communists’ appeal to Renaissance ideas meant, above all, an attempt to mold a harmonious Man, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on April 5 on the Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov program on the Russia One TV channel.

Kurginyan believes that an attempt to reform Catholicism and Renaissance Man by appealing to antiquity led to the West’s abandonment of harmonious Man. According to him, the fragmentation of all sciences did not begin at once, but in the era of Protestantism this process gained its momentum and provoked the abandonment of a harmonious human being.

The political scientist and philosopher explained that the Reformation was the most mortal enemy of Renaissance. “No one fought so bitterly with Erasmus of Rotterdam or other prominent figures of the Renaissance as Luther,” he said. Kurginyan stressed that this conflict was absolute and mortal.

He noted that the reform of Catholicism ended up as the fragmentation of the picture of the world.

“This eventually provoked an ongoing fragmentation of sciences as well as conveyors, mechanisms and everything else. The West has become inseparable from this process of fragmentation after the Renaissance,” he said.

Kurginyan stressed that Russian communists understood their appeal to Renaissance ideas firstly as the education of a harmonious Renaissance Man.

“I have friends in the older generation who worked with Lunacharsky. He used to say to such writers as Fedin and Alexei Tolstoy: ‘Soviet writers, while it is still possible and there is still time, you should work hard, because a generation will next be born in which everyone will be no less than Goethe.’ And he believed it: ‘We are creating this new Man — everyone will be no less than Goethe.” Kurginyan said that it is the search of a new Man and everything connected with it.
