The scenario of Azerbaijan recognizing Nagorno-Karabakh, excluding the five disputed surrounding regions has already been put on the table of international negotiations, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan stated on October 14 in Sunday evening with Vladimir Solovyev program on Russia 1 TV channel.
According to the political scientist, there is only one security guarantee for Nagorno-Karabakh while giving up disputed territories – this is Azerbaijan recognizing the sovereignty of the republic. “This is the end of the problem. Five territories are given up, the sovereignty of Nagorno-Karabakh is recognized by Azerbaijan, and it ends once and for all,” explained Kurginyan.
“When Aliyev tells them that ‘you will live even better, the living will be higher, it’s gonna be fine’, then, first of all, of course, ‘selling the birthright for lentil pottage’ immediately comes to mind. And secondly, no one believes him at all. Everyone understands that once Azerbaijan enters Karbakh, it will clear out the whole territory,” the political scientist said.
Sergey Kurginyan is convinced that no one will give up Karabakh, and if Aliyev wants to come and take these territories by brute force, let him roughly calculate what the cost will be in the course of defensive battles.
“Resolute people live in Karabakh, who will not give it to Azerbaijan in exchange for any promises, because these are the true people. They are, incidentally, ready to die. One person who is ready to die is worth fifty who are not,” emphasized Kurginyan.
It should be noted that one of the possible scenarios for the settlement of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh previously was the so-called “Kazan formula”, which was developed more than 10 years ago by the Moscow initiative. According to it, Armenia is to hand over seven districts around Karabakh to Azerbaijan, which constitute a “security belt”, according to the peace agreement.
At the first stage, the Agdam, Fizuli, Jabrayil, Zangelan and Kubatli districts are to be transferred to Azerbaijan. Later, the Kelbajar district and the non-corridor section of Lachinsky district would be returned. At that time, Armenia, led by President Serzh Sargsyan, proposed exchanging those territories for Azerbaijan recognizing Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state.
