Kurginyan speaks about how Lukashenko can regain Belarusians’ trust

The President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko must publicly, under his own control, initiate an investigation into all cases of illegal detentions in the republic, avoiding any sweeping accusation of the security officials, the leader of the Essence of Time social political movement Sergey Kurginyan said on August 18 in Vladimir Solovyov’s Full Contact broadcast on the Vesti FM radio station.

During the broadcast, Kurginyan expressed his opinion regarding how the Belarusian leader can regain Belarusians’ trust and love after the incident with beating the detained people.

According to the political scientist, what happened cannot be reversed, but an attempt to manage the consequences must be made.

“He can say that isolated cases of abuse of power took place. But if he belabors it too much now, the security officials may permanently abandon him,” the expert said, noting that losing the security officials’ trust is deadly for the leader.

Lukashenko has to initiate a public investigation into all incidents of unjustified use of force.

“He must be public all the time. ‘Who was beaten? Why was he beaten? Who did it? Where? How did it all happen? Who did what and at which police station?’ He must become part of the process,” Kurginyan stressed.

At the same time, it is very important that the investigation should not look like a concession to the protesters and an attempt to shift all the blame on to the security officials, Kurginyan believes.

“This is a matter of his confidence and persuasiveness, and choosing who will cover the situation with him and speak about it,” the expert noted.

Security officials must receive a message that the leader will not surrender them to the protesters, and that he will not surrender himself.

“The point is that they must believe in him! They must know that he will never give them up, that he will go all the way, that he will not turn aside,” Kurginyan stressed.
