Political scientist: Number of first Lukashenko’s rally does not mean anything

17.08.2020, Moscow.

The number of participants of the first rally to support the re-elected President of Belorussia Aleksandr Lukashenko does not mean anything, political scientist and doctor of political sciences Sergey Chernyakhovsky said on August 16 to a correspondent of the Rossa Primavera News Agency.

“When a core team began to form in 2011-2012, which would later gather the rally at Poklonnaya Gora outnumbering several times the rallies at Bolotnaya and Sakharova, it all began with a small rally that Sergey Kurginyan held at Vorobyovy Gory,” the political scientist noted.

Therefore, “the number of people at the first rally that Lukashenko has organized does not mean anything,” Chernyakhovsky said.

According to the doctor of political sciences, now the president should “mobilize his supporters.”

On August 16, the Belyaya Rus organization held a rally in the daytime on the Independence Square in Minsk. The re-elected President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke at the rally. According to the Belorussian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of participants was 65 thousand people.

In the evening, opposition members held their rally on the Independence Square. Their rally outnumbered that Lukashenko held.

In December 2011 in Moscow, at Vorobyovy Gory, the Essence of Time movement held a rally against color revolution gathered by Sergey Kurginyan. The number of the rally was estimated to be 3 to 3.5 thousand people. This was when Sergey Kurginyan publicly burned an orange band, the symbol of the opposition rallies at Bolotnaya Square and Sakharova street.

In February 2012, Sergey Kurginyan together with a number of other public figures and experts called people to participate in a rally against color revolution at Poklonnaya Gora, which gathered, according to various estimates, 140 to 200 thousand people.

On August 9, presidential elections took place in Belorussia, at which the current President Aleksandr Lukashenko won.
