The US Armed Forces are located on German territory not to protect it, but to ensure transatlantic security, said Emily Haber, German Ambassador to the US in an online discussion at The Council on Foreign Relations. This was reported by RIA Novosti correspondent on June 16.
“US troops … are not there to defend Germany. They are there to defend the transatlantic security. … They are also there to project American power in Africa, in Asia,” stated Emily Haber.
Emily Haber reacted to US President Donald Trump’s allegations of the situation being unacceptable, when Germany cooperates with Russia, and the US has to protect it from Russia.
“Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia… pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia. So we’re protecting Germany. I don’t think it should have happened,” said Trump.
He also expressed his intention reduce by half the contingent of U.S. soldiers in Germany from 50 to 25 thousand.
