Turkey banned an airplane transporting humanitarian aid from China to Cyprus from flying over its airspace, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of Cyprus Yiannis Karousos told Cyprus News Agency on May 13.

China planned delivered 36 tons of medical equipment to combat the spread of coronavirus to Cyprus. The Chinese humanitarian aid included protective masks, shoe covers, disposable uniforms. Turkey, however, did not permit the aircraft to flight over its airspace.

For this reason, the pilots had to change course and flight “to the Moscow airport in Russia, where it will land for refueling,” Karusos added. “It is expected that the plane with medical equipment will arrive at Larnaca airport around 8 p.m.,” the minister said.
