Turkey shall not yield to US pressure over purchasing the S-400 missile defense system from Russia, stated Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu during a visit to the Hatay province on June 16, Anadolu news agency reports.
“We cannot accept the US’ persistent demands on the S-400 matter,” the minister commented on Turkey’s position.
Earlier, Ankara has already confirmed its intention to purchase the Russian S-400 despite Washington’s threats. In turn, the US continues to insist that such a purchase is unacceptable. According to Washington, the S-400 is incompatible with NATO standards.
If Turkey disobeys, the US threatens to impose sanctions and to stop the sale of F-35 fifth-generation jet fighters to Ankara.
