Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko published with an SS paratrooper on December 6 a photo on his Facebook page.
The photo demonstrates Poroshenko standing in a camouflage uniform in the ranks of paratroopers against the backdrop of a military transport aircraft. Since December 7, his followers have started to post comments on this photo noticing that one of the paratroopers had a chevron with the SS symbol from the times of the Great Patriotic War. Within 24 hours, one of the commentators complained that all of the disgruntled posts are coming from Russia, while Ukrainian readers seemed to be fine with it. He noted that the paratrooper and his leaders should have been sanctioned for wearing any non-authorized insignia on the military uniform.
Following the coup d’état in 2014, Ukraine has been witnessing the aggressive promotion of Nazi ideology as well as the glorification of Bandera. For instance, torchlight processions take place every year. In 2018, the Bandera greeting was officially introduced in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the police are planned to follow suit. However, long before the events of 2014, the descendants and militants of Nazi collaborators from the mid 20th century were embedded in government structures, which gave them an opportunity to prepare Ukrainian society for such a shift.
