The doctors from the Rostov region (southern Russia) clinical hospital performed the first successful liver transplantation surgery in the region using the in situ splitting technology, regional government’s press-service informed on June 19.
“The whole process of transplantation with 16 surgeons, 6 anesthesiologists-reanimatologists, ultrasound and laboratory diagnostics doctors, 6 surgical nurses, and other staff involved, has been performed in 3 surgery rooms at the same time and took 20 hours,” the report says.
The surgery was unique because the liver was dissected in such a way so to preserve blood circulation of the organ.
“At present, the patients are in a satisfactory condition and receive the necessary medical care,” the press-service’s representative emphasized.
Liver transplantation using the in situ splitting technology entails dissection of the donor’s liver right inside the body. Rostov regional clinical hospital has become the fourth medical institution in Russia, in which the doctors have mastered this technology.
