The war of the Syrian people with terrorism is a continuation of the Russian people’s war with fascism, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with Belarusian TV on Victory Day, reports RIA Novosti news agency on May 11, citing the text by the SANA Syrian news agency.
“The war your people waged back then is the same war that our people are waging today. The difference is only in names and different means, but the content is the same”, said Bashar Assad.
“The background is the same, and the war is the same. Why did Nazism appear; what did it want? it wanted to dominate the world, to exclude the rest. Today, our people are fighting not only with terrorists, but with those who sponsor them”, the Syrian president added.
Also, in the course of the interview, Assad noted that the talks in Geneva have been fruitless, and they were only a meeting place for the media in order to achieve unilateral concessions from the Syrian government. He noted that the talks in Astana, initiated by Russia and later joined by Iran and Turkey, are a real attempt to achieve de-escalation of the conflict by introducing security zones.
Bashar al-Assad stated that “any escalation is doomed to failure, because the Syrian and Russian armies with the support of Iran and Hezbollah will strike any terrorist movement who try to break the agreements on these zones”.
On May 4 in Astana, representatives of Russia, Turkey and Iran signed an agreement on the creation of four security zones in Syria. According to the agreement, military operations and flights of aviation have been banned in these territories as of May 6. The Syrian authorities support this treaty, the realization of which will allow for the separation of terrorist groups from the part of the opposition which agrees to the truce.
