Galina Tretyakova, the head of the Ukrainian Insurance Federation, stated during a round-table discussion in Kiev that legalizing certain criminal activities is a way to raise money for the Retirement Fund of Ukraine, TASS news agency reports.
According Tretyakova, the budget could receive income from legalizing prostitution, the arms trade, gambling, and marijuana cultivation and sale.
For the last few years, due to the country’s critical economic situation, the question of legalizing certain criminal business “industries” has come up in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (the Ukrainian Parliament) repeatedly. In particular, the last time this question was posed was during fall of 2015, when bills called “On the Regulation of Prostitution and Sex Establishments” and casino legalization were proposed. But at that time, members of the Rada did not support these initiatives.
