Seedling of Tulasi, one of sacred plants of India, planted in orangery of Donetsk Botanical Garden

Tulasi, which is known for its various medicinal properties, has been planted in one of the orangeries of the institution.

Tulasi is a subshrub in the family Lamiaceae. Tulasi is a sacred plant for a number of Indian religious traditions and is worshiped as one of the avatars of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity. Holy basil has a variety of medicinal properties.

A total of five thematic orangeries covering the area of more than 3000 square meters are established in the Donetsk Republican Botanical Garden as of today. In these orangeries plants from America, Asia, the Mediterranean, Africa and Australia, the tropics and subtropics as well as the plants of tropical rain forests are collected. These collections are regularly enriched as a result of the academic missions to other botanical gardens and exchanging of seeds and cuttings as a part of Delectus system (international system of seed exchange). Within Delectus system, different countries and amateurs exchange or give the samples of species and varieties of plants to each other as a present.
