IRNA: Iranian president’s helicopter crashes due to technical malfunction

The crash of a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi occurred due to a technical malfunction, IRNA news agency reported on May 20.

“Raisi faced martyrdom on Sunday (May 19, 2024) in a helicopter crash that occurred due to a technical malfunction of the helicopter,” the agency noted.

The crash of the Iranian president’s helicopter occurred on the night of May 19-20 near the border with Azerbaijan. In addition to Ebrahim Raisi, on board were Foreign Minister Iana Hosein Amir Abdollahian, Governor of East Azerbaijan Malek Rahmati, representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in East Azerbaijan Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, head of the presidential guard Mehdi Mousavi, as well as three crew members.

First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will become Iran’s interim president. The funeral of President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage will be held on May 21 in the city of Tabriz.

The country’s Election Committee has proposed a new date of June 28 for the extraordinary presidential election. The relevant documents have been sent to the Guardian Council for consideration. According to the Iranian Constitution, it is necessary to find a new president after the death of the current one within 50 days.
