Will Germany have a chancellor with a new last name?

18.05.2022, Moscow.

The Social Democrats in the German government, led by Chancellor Scholz, have been criticized by virtually all German media for their irresolution in supplying heavy weapons to Ukraine.

At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities allow themselves an openly derogatory attitude towards representatives of the SPD in the German government.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky refused to receive German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, also a Social Democrat, for his excessive pro-Russian stance in the past, although the visit had been previously agreed upon.

In this situation, Chancellor Scholz refused to visit Kiev, after which the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andrey Melnik, called him an “offended liverwurst.”

However, despite this attitude towards the official authorities of Germany on the part of Ukraine, the chairman of the opposition CDU party Friedrich Merz considered it quite appropriate to pay a visit to Zelensky in Kiev instead of Scholz.

Then the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Annalena Berbock from the Alliance 90/The Greens also came to Ukraine.

In general, in Germany there is a surprising unanimity between the Greens and FDP parties which are forming green light coalition together with the SPD on the one hand, and the largest opposition party CDU on the other, on the main political issue – the strengthening of Germany’s role in the conflict in Ukraine.

At the same time, this issue has become a stumbling block for the coalition partners, because the SPD, despite all its statements about the need to support Ukraine, is in no hurry to drag Germany even more into the Ukrainian conflict.

If political processes in Germany continue developing in the same direction, it cannot be ruled out that in the near future Germany may have a new government coalition and a new chancellor named Merz.
