Political expert: Ukraine wants to be Russia's dependent

12.09.2021, Moscow.

Ukrainian politicians are acting in such a way as to make Ukraine a Russian dependent, said Vladimir Olenchenko, a senior researcher at the Center for European Studies at IMEMO RAS, the REGNUM news agency reported on September 12.

“The will of Ukrainian politicians is aimed at making the country a legal dependent of Russia with an appropriate document. But on such a basis cooperation is impossible,” he said.

This is the way Olenchenko reacted to Ukrainian politicians’ talking about the inclusion in the program of the Normandy format meetings the negotiations on the obligatory transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. “What Kiev officials are now talking about seems extremely reasonable to them, but for everyone else it is just far-fetched and unreasonable demands,” the expert said.

According to him, Ukraine should negotiate directly with Russia for mutually beneficial cooperation, and not to complain to the West and not to impose its decisions in this matter on Moscow.

The Ukrainian President’s assistant Andrey Ermak said that politicians consider the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline as a threat to their country’s security. He said that this issue should be added for consideration in the Normandy format.

The Normandy format is a group of German, Russian, Ukrainian and French leaders for resolving the conflict in the east of Ukraine.
