Kurginyan: Why do only black and COVID lives matter?

21.10.2021, Moscow.

The measures against the so-called coronavirus epidemic have brought more harm than the coronavirus itself, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said in an interview to Business Online published on January 17.

“There is the special profession of the epidemiologist. He must answer the only question whether this is an epidemic or not. He sees that the disease is terrible. He empathizes with the people, and he suffers. But he says that this is not an epidemic, because morbidity is below one per cent. This is the norm. <…> However, no one asks the experts or listens to them,” the analyst explained.

An epidemiological threshold is calculated for every disease depending on the danger and transmission rate of each infection. Usually, this level is 5-7% of population. However, for dangerous diseases like the plague it can be much lower.

As former Chief Sanitary Inspector of Russia Gennady Onishchenko said in October, “incidence thresholds have not been calculated for the coronavirus.”

In general, an epidemic is characterized by a significantly elevated incidence in certain area over the usual level. When an epidemic takes place in many countries on the globe or at least one country entirely, it may be called pandemic.

“How many people have died in Russia and globally? Is this an epidemic? Is this comparable to the victims of Spanish flu? (Spanish flu killed 100 million.) No! Then why are the measures taken so disproportional? Why are the measures so inappropriate to the disease? Treat it!” Kurginyan said.

Instead, the authorities in most of the countries “have stopped the global economy, with terrible consequences to the people,” the analyst stressed.

He noted that in Africa, malaria alone has taken more lives than COVID-19, partly because malaria is now treated less efficiently after the coronavirus became a priority. But this applies not only to malaria but also to cancer patients, cardiologic patients…

“The victims are numerous. They say ‘black lives matter.’ COVID patients’ lives matter as well. But do cancer patients’ lives matter? Do malaria patients’ lives matter?” the political scientist stressed.

Kurginyan explained, “We do not deny that COVID is a very serious disease. We only ask what the percent of fatal outcomes in Russia is. And we pose this question from an epidemiological position, not a humanitarian or a moral one. We are not COVID dissidents. We are discussing the details of this disease, not its non-existence. We are discussing the costs of the quarantine, because all lives equally matter.”
