Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on August 23 during a forum “The Territory of Meanings” on a proposition to make the OSCE a mediator in negotiations between the government and opposition in Belarus, RIA Novosti reports.

He said that many Western leaders in Europe and in the USA call upon Russia to influence the Belarusian leadership in order to get its consent to make the OSCE a mediator in the negotiations. The Minister reminded “We know how the Western mediation ended in 2014 in Ukraine.”

According to Sergey Lavrov, the Ukrainian opposition then refused, the very next morning, to fulfill the obligations laid out in an agreement signed by the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland, saying “it is over, we have taken another decision.”

On February 21, 2014, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich signed the agreement with opposition leaders under the mediation of the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland, who also signed the document. According to the agreement, the Ukrainian authorities withdrew its security forces from the center of Kiev, the opposition should have done the same. However, protesters seized administrative buildings, while the Ukrainian parliament removed Yanukovich from power, changing the country’s constitution.
