Kurginyan: Buffer states are doomed outside of the empire

13.08.2020, Moscow.

The Post-Soviet buffer states have no long-term prospects for an autonomous political existence, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on August 11 on the Solovyov LIVE YouTube broadcast.

“The buffer states are doomed outside of the empire. Either way, they have to stop all these sovereignty games and enter all possible relations with Russia. Otherwise they will fail!” Kurginyan said.

The philosopher assessed the strategic prospects of Aleksandr Lukashenko’s political system, whose authority has been challenged by the Belarussian opposition for two days, including clashes in the streets with law enforcement.

According to Sergey Kurginyan, Aleksandr Lukashenko’s political style is fundamentally different than that of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich, who was overthrown in 2014, which gives the Belarussian leader chances to remain in power and to suppress the riots.

However, his continued overtures to the West, failure to mobilize his supporters among the citizenry, and a lack of a clearly shaped political strategy make Belarus’ long-term future uncertain.

On August 9, the campaign office of the opposition candidate for Belarussian presidency Svetlana Tikhanovskaya refused to acknowledge the election outcome, calling her supporters to take to the streets. Mass rallies and clashes with law enforcement in various cities within the country intensify during the evening for the third day in a row.
