General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces outlines the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons

07.08.2020, Moscow.

Any missile attack of Russia territory can become a reason to launch Russian nuclear weapons, report the authors of Krasnaya Zvezda, the official newspaper of the Russian Ministry of Defense, in the article called “About the Principles of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the Sphere of Nuclear Deterrence” published on August 7.

The General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces representatives conducted the study of the current state of international security. In particular, they listed a number of steps the US undertook regarding to its withdrawal from arms control agreements: the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM); the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty); the Open Skies Treaty, which expires on February 5, 2021; and the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-3).

In recent years, the US had systematically undermined the international security system which significantly deteriorated the situation in the world, noted the authors of the article.

“Thus, there will be no existing international agreement limiting the strategic arms race after termination of the START-3 Treaty, and  “war hawks” in the US will have their hands completely free”, stressed the General Staff.

The article also describes the US conclusions on the use of its nuclear weapons which are mentioned in official documents. The General Staff said that all US steps in the field of strategic weapons linked in one chain and are aimed at winning a possible future war with Russia.

According to representatives of the General Staff, any missile attacking Russian territory will be regarded as nuclear, since it is impossible to reliably establish its type at the time of the attack. Therefore, the goal of such a missile attack will be considered “the destruction of Russia as a state,” and in response, the Russian Armed Forces will use nuclear weapons.

Russia draws its ‘red lines’ which we do not recommend to cross to anyone. However, if a potential adversary decides to do so, the response will be undoubtedly devastating, ” concluded the authors of the article.
