US surveillance plane intercepted over the Baltic Sea near Russian maritime border

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a US surveillance plane over the Baltic Sea on January 28, the website of the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

An aerial target was detected by Russian means of airspace control. It flew over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea approaching the Russian border.

The crew of a Russian Su-27 fighter was scrambled to intercept this target. It identified the target as a US P-8A Poseidon spy plane.

The Russian pilots forced the US surveillance plane to pull away from the Russian border. The Russian fighter jet returned to base after completing its mission.

Interceptions of foreign planes near the Russian border occur systematically. It has most frequently been US pilots who have to be forced away from the Russian border.

Such interceptions usually end up with the US complaining about alleged violations of international law and dangerous maneuvers by Russian jets that threaten American pilots.
