Russian Foreign Ministry: US military presense in Syria questions the unity of the country

25.12.2017, Russia.

Further presence of the US military in Syria calls into question the unity of the country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in his written interview on December 25, RIA Novosti news agency reports.

According to Lavrov, the United States military activity on Syrian territory was “originally illegitimate” under international law, and it only becomes pointless and in many ways dangerous after the defeat of major terrorist groups.

“The Syrian government could de facto tolerate the United States there for the sake of pressing anti-terrorism tasks. Attempts to find justification for the preservation of their presence in Syria after the defeat of ISIL (organization banned in Russia – Rossa Primavera News Agency) do not stand to criticism. In practical terms, the illegal presence of the US military there creates real obstacles to a political settlement and calls into question the unity of the country, “ Lavrov said.

In mid-December, Philip Giraldi, a former CIA officer, the executive director of the US National Interests Council, commenting on American activity in Syria, said, “The United States wants a seat at the table for post-conflict Syrian arrangements and so is keeping advisers, allies and active terrorists in the region to maintain legitimacy for its presence.”
